Issue of the Dutch periodical De Architect, entirely devoted to the American Hotel in Amsterdam, an Amsterdam landmark in Art Nouveau style.
With a short preface by W. Kromhout (the hotel’s architect), 6 full page photographic plates of the building (protected by the original tissue paper) and lots of relevant advertisements.
The wrappers were printed in lithography after a striking design by R.N. ROLAND HOLST, one of the great artists from the Dutch Art Nouveau period.
Rare and in exceptionally fine condition.
Extensive catalogue for an exhibition at The Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, New York, on Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, who was one of the most influential architects and designers of the 19th century, his ideas and design principles were adopted and developed by followers as diverse as William Morris and Frank Lloyd Wright.

Two oversized glossy late 1950’s postcards showing glamorous b/w portraits of French icon BRIGITTE BARDOT, each with a 45RPM recording pressed into the varnish.
The recordings have nothing to do with BB: it is an orchestrated bilangual version by Dutch singer Louise de Montel of the songs La Vie En Rose/Mijn Schoonste Roos and Les Feuilles Mortes/Vallende Bladeren respectively.
Uncommon, especially as a pair, both items in very clean and bright condition.

The dolls houses of the Rijksmuseum show the only nearly unaltered preserved 17th and 18th century interiors in the Netherlands. They contain unique examples of filled linen cupboards and cabinets, of miniatures made of silver and glass, but also of rarely preserved objects such as baskets and floor brooms. They surprise us with details in the hanging of curtains or the use of lace in pillowcases.
Issue of the periodical DIE DAME, an "Illustrierte Mode-Zeitschrift“ published in Berlin, Germany, between 1911 and 1943.
The image on the front is by TAMARA DE LEMPICKA, this painting (titled En Plein Été) was especially created for this magazine.
Good copy, with some minor imperfections, spine strengthened with tape.
NB: In an early stage of her career legendary Art Deco-artist Tamara de Lempicka made six of these paintings for Die Dame, they were reproduced on the covers in actual size.
Charming self-published 28-page book with reproductions of sketches and watercolours made at the Fiji Islands by South African/Canadian artist and illustrator Charles van Sandwyk, accompanied by short calligraphed texts.
Dustjacket printed in gold in letterpress, with a small mounted illustration in colour (3 or 4 different plates were used for this edition of 1500 copies).

Complete set of 16 (sixteen) original copper-engraved plates, with captions in Dutch, German and English, showing scenes on the subject of whale fishery by Sieuwert van der Meulen, engraved by Adolf van der Laan, published by Pieter Schenk, Amsterdam, around 1750.
Sheet size: 22 x 34 cm, image size: 18 x 21 cm, in very fine condition, the sheets held together by means of a single stitch on the left hand side.
These prints were first published ca. 1725 by the same Dutch publisher as part of a work on both herring fishery and whaling titled "Groote Vissery", with 16 plates on each of the subjects.
The plates have been reissued a number of times in various shapes and editons, this complete set on fine large paper was reprinted in its original shape shortly after the first publication.

Fine work, extensively describing and illustrating the renowned collection of Dimitris Contominas, whose library was built with the goal of collecting every book by scholars and visitors to Greece from the fifteenth to the mid-twentieth century.
Book of hours, consisting of over 80 pages, ca. 18,5 x 14 cm, with preprinted texts and elaborate pictorial borders in a fine Neo-Gothic style.
Both the text and the borders have been extremely delicately ILLUMINATED BY HAND in various colours, including gold and silver.
Handbound in an exclusive binding stamp-signed GRUEL (see below).
This fine prayer book was executed on occasion of the marriage of Juliette PÉAN and Tony SAINT CLAIR, in the Eglise La Madeleine, Paris, France, October 1892.
Illumination done by an anonymous but highly skillful artist.
NB: The marriage happened to be some sort of social event, as the Parisian periodical LA NOUVELLE REVUE had the following fashion report printed...:
“A la Madeleine, le 24, le mariage de Mlle Juliette Péan, fille du célèbre chirurgien docteur Péan, membre de l'Académie de médecine, avec M. Tony Saint-Clair, sous-lieutenant au 2t dragons, neveu de Mme la comtesse de Rancy, avait attiré foule nombreuse et très élégante. Mais ce courrier, déjà long, ne me permet guère d'énumérer toutes les toilettes que j'y ai notées pour les lectrices de la Nouvelle Revue. A la vérité, la mode, si variable qu'elle soit, dure cependant plus de quinze jours; je renverrai donc à ma prochaine causerie là description de quelques-unes d'entre elles."

The image shows the exquisite binding by Gruel, one of the most highly esteemed French bookbinder firms: full brown morocco with silk doublures and gilt inside dentelles, two finely engraved metal clasps, a large engraved metal monogramme in Art Nouveau style mounted on the front, all edges gilt and finely gauffered.
Stamp-signed in gold on the foot of the spine. Some minor faults.

Fine lithograph, printed by Atelier Mathieu, Zürich on Rives BFK in a limited edition of only 200 copies, all NUMBERED AND SIGNED BY PETER PHILLIPS in pencil.
This is one out of a series of 28 art posters specially created for the 1972 Olympic Games by artists like David Hockney, Allen Jones, Viktor Vasarelyand others.
These posters were printed in various qualities and editions, this is the rare larger sized SIGNED DELUXE version on heavy paper, with parts of the image superbly embossed.
Finely designed book, the photographs printed in "photogravure" on matt paper, all in their appropriate monochrome tones or according to their contemporary hand colouring.

This book offers a journey that is both evocative and historically significant, through the collections of the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, in the company of some 30 photographers, including Félix Bonfils, Ernest Benecke, Félix Teynard and James Robertson.
Monochrome reproductions in photogravure of 100 works of art which were exposed during the famous SALON DE PARIS 1890, with comments by art critic Armand Dayot.
Artists included are Jean BERAUD, Giovanni BOLDINI, Emile FRIANT, Jean-Leon GEROME, Leon Augustin LHERMITTE, Pierre PUVIS DE CHAVANNES, Georges ROCHEGROSSE and many others of lesser fame.
Out of the 616 deluxe copies printed for the CIRCLE DE LA LIBRAIRIE, this is one of only 16 on Japanese paper and one of only 12 with an extra suite of 24 of the plates.
Sturdy morocco binding by ZAEHNSDORf: full blue calf, sparsely but tastefully gilt, the suite placed in a compartment skilfully incorporated in the back of the binding. Curiously enough the spine reads “Salon de 1891”, which is a pity (as are the 2cm tear in the upper joint of the binding and some smaller blemishes).
Original aquatint, coloured by hand, taken from "An illustrated Record of Important Events in the Annals of Europe" by R. Bowyer, showing the allied troups in Paris just before Napoleon’s defeat.
A philatelic oddity created by French artist Yves Klein (1928/1962).
An original stamp from a series created in the period 1957/59 by painting a layer of blue pigment (known as IKB, International Klein Blue) on full sheets of perforated gummed blank stamps.
Klein managed to convince the French postal authorites to grant him permission for using these stamps in stead of regular ones, which he first did in 1957 while sending invitations for exhibitions in Paris.
He used the stamps for two more years and donated the remaining ones to the head of the design department of a Swedish museum.
During the years a number of them found their way into the world, sometimes fetching astonishing amounts of money at auctions because of what they actually are: genuine IKB paintings in miniature by Yves Klein.

Fine pin up image by classic USA artist Billy Devosrs (1908-1985) printed in offset lithography by the Weiller Company, Philadelphia, USA.
Printed on rather thin paper but undamaged and in surprisingly clean and crisp condition.
Close to mint copy of this fine calendar, with 12 glamourous images by pin up artist Ernest Chiriaka (who used the name Darcy as a book cover designer) printed in colour against a black background.
The rare envelope, showing a repetition of one of the images, comes with mild traces of handling.

A curiosity, issued in the early 1950's as a promotional gift by the N.V. Lettergieterij Amsterdam (Amsterdam Type Foundry), formerly Tetterode: a small metal 10 point punch engraved in order to print the full text of The Lord’s Prayer in the Dutch language.
A print of the text is added on a seperate sheet, both items are packed in a transparant paper bag with Dutch explanatory texts which learns that the tiny printing surface (3,76 square mm) contains roughly 380 letters, each 0,145 mm in height.
English language edition of this huge work which includes “a number of Haeckel's drawings and watercolours which have never been published before, the first detailed overview of the scientist and artist's vast output and provides a lively picture of his exceptional talent."
Mint in stylish orange cloth, dustjacket and sturdy blank cardboard slipcase.
Set of two illustrated German language publications promoting the Dutch coastal village of Scheveningen, near The Hague. One of the booklets (in semi Jugendstil) contains a large folding birds' eye view of the village, with a map of Holland on the back.
Vulnerable items in wrappers with some faults, added is an unused vintage paper luggage sticker issued by the famous Kurhaus, also in Scheveningen.
A striking example of a piece of sheet music from the Art Deco period: one of many songs that were composed and rush-released as a tribute to Charles Lindbergh’s succesful first solo flight over the Atlantic, 1927, and doubtlessly the one with the most stylish cover: a design by celebrated Belgian artist PETER DE GREEF.

150 collectable books on the Antarctic: an extensively described and finely illustrated bibliography, printed in a limited edition of 500 copies.
Two aquatint scenes from Switzerland: Uetliberg near Zürich and the Rhein Fall near Schaffhausen, both mounted on card, extremely delicately finished by hand by the publisher/artist R. Dikenmann, Zürich.
Stamped on the back, hand titled on the front.
Finely detailed and large sepia toned panoramic view, ca. 150 (!) x 16 cm, as seen from Monte San Salvatore, Ticino, Switzerland, projecting the Lake of Lugano and other areas, with geographical details printed along the upper margin.
As most copies the second pastedown has been covered with a lithographed plate announcing the Ferrovia Funicolare, which opened the year this leporello was issued (1890). Excellent copy, lithograph clean and undamaged, the gilding of the embosssed cloth porfolio somewhat faded.
The importance of this book, an account of the “most succesful Dutch circumnavigation to date” (first published in Leiden, 1619, in Dutch and in Latin) has been widely explained elsewhere, we need the space on this page to describe the POOR condition of this particular copy.
Already incomplete (please note: the pages 177 up to 192 are missing!) and in rather bad shape, this copy was rebound in the early 20th century in calf-backed speckled paper-covered board with handwritten vellum title label on the spine. The book block was crudely cut short at least 2 cms along the fore-edge, obviously causing damage to the plates (and in some occasions to the text).
The book is supposed to contain 2 folding maps (one of World and one of Sout-East Asia) which are both MISSING, so is the last plate (Hoornse Eylant).
All in all the book still contains 22 of the 25 plates, 5 of them double page, all of which with damage or even serious damage, showing scenes maps and views of:
